Pakistan: Chief of anti-terror agency resigns – Adnkronos Security
Islamabad, 21 July (AKI) – Tariq Pervez, the chief of a federal group with a brief to coordinate Pakistan’s battle against terrorism, resigned his post on Tuesday amid a bureaucratic spat over turf. His resignation comes as the country struggles to end attacks by Taliban militants and their Al-Qaeda allies.
Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency has come under criticism for disorganisation because of its perceived inability to coordinate the work of different agencies including security services.
Pervez, a former policeman, has also been engaged in a struggle about the authority which would oversee the agency, according to a news report.
He thought it should fall under the jurisdiction of the prime ministers’ office but ultimately he caved into pressure by the Pakistani interior ministry which wanted control of the agency, according to the report.
