Indonesia’s parliament on Tuesday passed a controversial corruption court bill which is likely to curb the court’s power and reduce its effectiveness in tackling graft in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. Skip related content
The Corruption Eradication Commission, known by its Indonesian acronym KPK, and the corruption court have been the two strongest weapons in the fight against graft under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The following are possible consequences of the bill.
ANTI-CORRUPTION AGENCY KPK RETAINS ITS POWERS
The good news is that the anti-corruption agency, or KPK, will retain both its power to investigate and prosecute in corruption cases, and will continue to be allowed to use wire-taps in its investigation of suspects.
Some politicians had tried to have those powers removed in an attempt to de-fang the agency.
CORRUPTION COURT WILL BE WEAKENED
