YouTube – Sugar shortage sours Pakistani Ramadan – 30 Aug 09

Pakistan is facing a severe sugar shortage following failed crops.

Prices have doubled since the beginning of this year. This is souring the mood of the public during the festive season of Ramadan, when sweets are consumed in high quantities.

Al Jazeera’s Anita McNaught reports from the capital, Islamabad, where many blame the price spike on political games played by industry leaders.

Reports say more than 50 per cent of the country’s sugar mills are owned by political leaders or their families.
