Popular Unity Party (PUP) chief Mohamed Bouchiha on Friday (August 28th) became the first opposition leader to officially challenge Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in the October 25th presidential race, local and international press reported. “Our candidacy isn’t just a simple matter of standing for election, but we want to stress the role the PUP can play in making its contribution in the management of public affairs,” he told reporters. Tunisians should have the “right to choose”, he said. In the 1999 elections, Bouchiha was the first opposition candidate to pass the 1% mark, Middle East Online noted.
